“3 Shades of Blue: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, and the Lost Empire of Cool” is a superb book by renowned biographer James Kaplan. It chronicles the story of how jazz arrived at the pinnacle of American culture in 1959 … following the sometimes difficult paths of three legendary artists––Davis, Coltrane, and Evans––who came together to create the most iconic jazz album of all time, Kind of Blue.  It’s a book about music, business, the towns that gave jazz a place to call home, and the challenges faced during the journeys of three musical giants as they climbed to the mountaintop of 1959 and beyond.

All Blues / Joshua – Miles Davis

In October 1964, Miles Davis appeared in concert at the Teatro dell’Arte in Milan Italy with a dream quintet including himself on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on sax, Herbie Hancock at the piano, Ron Carter playing bass and Tony Williams on drums. It doesn’t get better than that!  This was the era of Miles I have always preferred … when he was still innovating and not just experimenting.  Even as he evolved, one thing that never changed was his adherence to his statement, “Don’t play the notes that are there.  Play the notes that are not there.”  The two cuts below are from that live 1964 concert … a Miles Davis original All Blues (upper) and a Miles Davis-Victor Feldman tune called Joshua (bottom).

Workin’ With The Miles Davis Quintet

Green Dolphin Street is from the landmark album Kind of Blue, which has been regarded by many critics as Davis’s masterpiece and one of the greatest jazz albums of all time.  It is a studio recording cut in 1959 featuring saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, pianist Bill Evans, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb.

The Dave Brubeck composition In Your Own Sweet Way is part of the album Workin’ With The Miles Davis Quintet.  Although recorded in 1956, it wasn’t released until January 1960.  Miles, of course, played trumpet, John Coltrane was on tenor sax, Paul Chambers on base, and Philly Joe Jones played drums.  To my ear, these were Miles Davis’ finest years.

Landmark album, stellar players … Miles Davis on trumpet, “Cannonball” Adderley on alto sax, Jimmy Cobb plays drums, John Coltrane on tenor sax, Wynton Kelly at the piano and Paul Chambers bass.

Freddie gets a more uptempo treatment here with a trio consisting of Wes Montgomery on guitar, Melvin Rhyne playing organ and George Brown on drums.

It’s Miles Davis’ classic tune with lyrics by Hendricks, featuring Bobby McFerrin singing Wynton Kelly’s piano solo, Al Jarreau singing Davis’ solo, Hendricks singing Coltrane’s tenor solo and George Benson singing Cannonball Adderley’s alto solo. One amazing track.

Mr. Pastorius / Eighty One – Miles Davis

Miles Davis and his band recorded Mr. Pastorius on October 18, 1989 at Chelsea Studios in New York City.  The tune was written by Marcus Miller as a tribute to bassist Jaco Pastorius and features Miles on trumpet, Marcus Miller on bass, Kenny Garret playing alto sax, Ricky Wellman drums and Adam Holzman on Keyboards.

Eighty-One is from the 1965 Miles Davis album E.S.P.  Call it hard bop, post bop or modal jazz … by any other name, it still features the solid sound of Miles’ trumpet and some of the top musicians in jazz. Wayne Shorter plays tenor, Herbie Hancock is at the piano, Ron Carter is on double bass and Tony Williams plays drums.  It was recorded during one of my favorite periods of Davis’ several evolutions. 

All That Jazz Is LeGrand!

If you’re like most people, when you think of Michel LeGrand you think of film scores, orchestras and swirling strings.  Well fasten your seatbelt because he was one whale of a jazz pianist as well and swung with the best of them!  His pen and his baton will be sorely missed, Michel having passed away last month at the age of 87.

“You Must Believe In Spring” was recorded at the Festival International de Jazz in Montreal.  It features Michel Legrand (p), Phil Woods (as), Eric Lagace (b) and Ray Brinker (d).

“The Jitterbug Waltz” was recorded in 1958 in New York for the album “LeGrand Jazz”.  It’s an interesting mix of Michel with artists such as Herbie Mann, Barry Galbraith, Miles Davis, Phil Woods, Jerome Richardson, Eddie Costa, Paul Chambers and Kenny Dennis.  Listen for the silky smooth changes in tempo and subtle harp glissandos of Betty Giamann … not your everyday addition to a jazz combo.
